Who do I think I am??

Lance Armstrong?

Hardly.

Today I planned to do the fun little A Day in the Life of Me post. So I will go ahead as planned…

I snoozed a couple of times and finally got up to get LB ready for school….

image

I made coffee and breakfast, just like any other day.

imageimage

Man, I love this kid.

image

I took LB to school and came home to get set up for the day. When I am not actually with clients I do all my paperwork and office type work from home.

image

It wasn’t long until the Hubs and I decided to go for a bike ride. Yipeee!!!! My beautiful Nelly CIRN on the right…sigh…

image

We got ready and headed out for two loops, about 14 miles. My Garmin had a dead battery so I was sad to be riding naked. The first loop went without a hitch. I was riding fast, Hubs even told me so. He said I was riding as hard as he does when he rides on his own. He is still recovering from his marathon on Sunday but he was keeping up.

The second lap is where things got ugly. We were about 3 or 4 miles from home and I was cruising down a nice hill. By cruising I mean going probably 20 miles an hour, at least, maybe even 25 mph. I was going fast. I needed to spit but held it for a bit and didn’t want to spit and have it fly into the Hubs, that’s just gross. So, for some stupid reason I looked over my shoulder, I don’t really even remember which one, and spit AND lost control of my bike. I jerked it to the left and remember thinking, “Oh no! I don’t want to crash in the street, that will hurt, maybe even kill me.” So I jerked it back the other way and headed for the ditch, still going Mach speed. I knew I was going to die. I knew chances were good that this was my last few moments alive as I know it. My whole life flashed before my eyes. I knew the ditch was going to be softer than the pavement. I yelled something along the lines of “I can’t stop! I’m crashing!” and then it happened. I flew into the air, I flipped, I jerked, I twisted, I landed on my back, or so my husband says. I wondered if I would ever stop bouncing and hitting and flopping around like a  rag doll. When I came to a stand still the panic started to set in. Was I alive? Dead? Could I feel my feet? I could feel my arm and my bottom. Both hurt BAD. My throat on the front hurt too. It hurt to breath it hurt to move. I didn’t want to move.

Thank goodness my Hubs was there.  The secondary part of his job is being a medic so I knew I was in good hands. He told me to be still and not move. He did a preliminary check of my body, I felt his hands run down my legs, across my arms, he felt my neck and checked me for gaping wounds. I knew my bone had to be sticking out of my arm. I was scared to ask. About 5 cars flew by as I was laid out in the ditch. Nice people we have here….Hubs helped me roll to my side and slowly I got up. But quickly went back down to my knees. I wanted to sleep, or at least close my eyes. Finally I had kind of gotten it together enough for Hubs to feel ok to head to the house to get the car and come back for me. A nice lady stopped, turned around and came back to offer help. THANK YOU NICE LADY!!! She gave me a ride home.

The Hubs and I went back to get my bike. I didn’t want to see how bad it was. He told me it was jacked up.  He had hidden it in the trees until we could make it back for it.

The Ditch.

imageimage

And of course I landed in a patch of prickly thorny bushes. I got a cut on my chin and somehow managed to rip my $80 Brooks tights.  I’m just glad to be alive. Really. It was so scary. I could have died. Thank God a car was not coming.

I made an appointment to see my Dr. and he did a pretty lame examination. I got an X-ray of my pelvis and tailbone, which I am pretty sure is jacked up, but what can they do? My arm is ok, sore but not broken. I have a huge knot on it, bruised pretty bad. The pic doesn’t do it justice, it is rough.

image

I have bruises in other places, my thigh and stomach and other places that I can’t really show you…and you don’t really want to see.

Hidden in the trees…

image

Bringing her home… =(

image

image

She will go to the Dr. soon….We will see how bad the damage is. I’ve got to get her fixed so I can get back on. Check out the seat…yeah, THAT hurt.

image

Oh man….my poor bike. My poor body. I am happy to be alive and in one piece and not paralyzed for life. Scary stuff. I was certainly humbled today and reminded that life is short and precious and I am not a good bike rider…Things can happen in the blink of an eye.

I have no idea how this happened to my water bottle either. So weird.

My body is screaming at me to lay down now so I think I’m going to takes some drugs and call it a night.

  1. I'm really glad you're ok! Holy cow that sounds scary...just reading it sounds scary! I once bit in on the pavement while riding with my dog, he ran out in front of me and I'll never forget the feel of my arms hitting the ground. A warm bath is in the cards for you!!

    Yikes!!!

Omigoodness! So, so so glad you are okay--esp if Nelly is any indication of what happened!

Get better AMANDA and CIRN Nelly.

  13. Oh my gosh Amanda! I'm so sorry! :(

Thank goodness you are "okay" and were not riding alone. Wishing you (and your bike!) a full recovery.

  14. Amanda! OMG! That is so scary... :( I'm so glad your wounds are all superficial. Too bad the same can't be said for your bike. :(

Seriously glad you are okay. That could have been very ugly.

  15. OMG! I am so glad you are okay (alright, as good as you can be). It could have been so much worse. Thank goodness you had your guardian angel with you. It's pretty handy he's a medic too...

    Heal fast!

  16. I'm so glad you're ok. I've only crashed badly once - on RR tracks - and it sucks so bad because you know it's happening and you can do nothing and it seems to take freaking forever to be over and then it hurts...and you want to throw up.

Your poor body...your poor bike. Take care of you!!!!!!!

  17. Glad you are OK for the most part. I remember going really fast down a hill with a friend. A car came out of a side street. My friend moved over and took out my tires. He landed on the bottom, then his bike, then my bike and then me on top. I was OK, but his bike was totalled and he was bloody from ankles up to his head. I always apply brakes going downhill ever since that day, so I am at a speed that I feel in control.

On a positive note, it looks like your frame isn't bent. New wheels usually aren't too much.

  18. Holy crap. I was scared just reading your post. I'm glad it wasn't worse. That is my biggest fear - wrecking on the bike. I've gone in a ditch before too - from just that looking over my shoulder, but luckily I was going slow and didn't manage to hurt myself. Be careful out there!

  19. Oh NOOO, I hope your body feels better soon! I am always so scared on my bike, especially without Tim. The lady who won the AZ rock'n'roll marathon died a couple weeks ago riding her bike. She got hit by a truck, it was her fault but still. I really do hope you and your bike bounce back from this. Crashing is no fun. Crashing at high speed is super no fun!

    Get some rest!

    :) Kristal

  20. Amanda! You scared the crap out of me with this post. Thank God you are OK. I'm pretty sure I'm not getting on a bike any time soon. Heal quickly!

  22. I glad you are ok. That would of scaried the day lights out of me. I cant go down hill fast on a bike, because I'm consistently thinking the wheel is going to come off or something else will happen. Get some rest. Hope tomorrow you are feeling better.

  23. Woman! I am so glad you are in one piece! So glad Hubs was with you...so glad. Heal up and get back out there. I'll be thinking about you!

  24. Oh my goodness! I'm so glad you were not hurt worse than you are! That is some scary stuff! (I had a bad fall myself once, but luckily I was not going too fast and only ended up with some scrapes and a few bruises- it's not fun at all.) I hope that you heal and your bike gets fixed asap! Best of luck!

  27. oh my goodness I am so glad you are okay!!! I can't imagine how terrifying that must have been, knowing you were about to crash and not being able to do anything about it. Thank goodness your hubby was right there with you. Rest up! Update tomorrow on how you are feeling

  30. First, I am GLAD you are ok! GLAD that hubbs was with you and GLAD that you are still in one piece!
I had recently decided that I just don't like swimming. (I had been toying with the idea of a tri). I don't like going too fast on the bike and your post just sent me over the edge! Think I'll stick to marathons!!!! Rest up that body!

    ReplyDelete
  31. OMG - I'm glad you are okay! How scary! That's why I'll never be a TRI-er. I'm totally scared of falling off a bike - especially when I see how close cyclists ride together!

    ReplyDelete
  32. So, so glad you're ok!! Falling off a bike is incredibly scary! i'm really glad your husband knew how to take care of you! rest a bit over the next few days...you'll be sore :( But, you're a true warrior now!

    ReplyDelete
  33. I'm so incredibly glad that you're okay. I hope that you heal up quickly and that your bike will be ready to ride again soon!

  34. Yikes! I just found your blog today and this is the first post I read. Wish it was one that didn't involve a bad accident, but glad to hear you're okay and nothing is broken. Here's hoping you're up running and riding soon!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I dub you "Knievel."
So glad that you are not seriously injured...dude, that's scary stuff! Also glad that you were with someone, too! Rest up and heal that bod, Amanda!

    ReplyDelete
  36. No!! I was really hoping as I was reading down that you were going to drop an "April Fools!!" on us :( I'm so glad you're ok, and I hope nelly can be easily repaired.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I can't imagine how scary that was! It's a good reminder about going out alone, and needing to take ID and a phone. I'm glad you'll be ok!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Oh no!!!!! I am so glad to hear that you have just bumps and scrapes...nothing really broken!!! I'm sure it was super scary though! What a hero the hubs is.....I often wonder when I'm running alone who is going to save me! I hope you are feeling like yourself again soon!!!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Oh. My. GOD. So glad you are ok. I hope you heal fast, and that the doctor brings you good news.

    (hugs)

  40. WOW!! Crashing on your bike is not fun...glad you're still up and moving. (even if a little slow)

  41. Thank god you are okay! Get some rest...you will probably feel more of the bruising tomorrow. hope you feel better but thankful no one got really hurt.

    ReplyDelete
  42. This is great! Seriously! Lance Armstrong and pretty much every other professional cyclists have these kinds of crashes too, in fact, Lance had one in the last tour. So really, what this means is that you're a real, bonafide cyclist now! Congratulations! Don't hide those battle wounds, flaunt them :)

  43. So GLAD you are alive!!! And that you had the smarts to swerve off the road...knowing you local peeps they would have used you for a speed bump.. Will log on at home to view the pictures.. Take care buddy...

CIRN took on new meaning with this.. UGH!

  44. Ouch, Ouch, Ouch. Thankful you are ok and unbroken.

My brother had an accident not that long ago. Face first into the pavement. Shockingly, he was back on the bike within a week (he literally snapped his frame, so bike surgery took a couple weeks). May you recover quickly as well and be able to get back on with confidence.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Scary! Glad you are okay! Another reminder why we should avoid riding alone. Thanks for sharing. Heal quickly.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Geez! That must have been so scary...Thank goodness you weren't seriously injured and that your husband was there!

    ReplyDelete
  47. I am glad that you are not too badly injured, even if the bike is looking pretty sad.

I am scared to go too fast on my bike because of exactly what happened to you. When I run, if I fall it might hurt but that is it. On a bike if I call it will really hurt or I could die but more likely I will just be unable to run for awhile and that would be bad. So I run.

I hope you don't hurt too bad,

    elena

  48. Oh My!

So sorry to read that you took such a nasty spill. Glad that you're [largely] ok and that hubby was there with you!

I think, in the grand scheme of things, the moral of the story is -- Next time, just let the spit fly. If it hits him, sure, that IS gross, but MUCH better than the alternative of watching his beautiful wife go flying off into the ditch! Eeeks!

    Feel Better Soon!!

    ReplyDelete
  49. I think maybe you should start doing all physical activities while wearing a helmet, elbow, and knee pads. Just for safe measure! Hope you feel better soon!!

    ReplyDelete
  50. First off, since I've heard of this post from multiple people already (and alludes from yourself as well), I should have been prepared, but I think it surprised me even more!

I'm so glad to hear you made it out ok, but sorry to hear that afterwards you've been taking it easy due to the crash!

Yay for having your husband there too, immediate medical help is a plus. And the lady giving you a ride?, awesome! Though, I kind of always expect people to drive by without stopping.

    Hope you're feeling better!!!

    ReplyDelete
  51. So glad you are ok. Hope you feel better soon cuz you will make a terrible bed-rest person! I'm glad your hubby was there so you didn't lie in a ditch unnoticed or something awful like that. Also glad he took good care of you instead of taking pics for the blog :) Sending healing powers your way!

  52. OMG YOU POOR THING! It must have hurt so bad. I fell on train tracks once and I was only going 5-10 miles an hour and it was HORRIBLE. I couldn't walk for a day. Ice up. Take some IB profin. And get lots of rest. I'm sorry :(

  53. That is why I am not a biker. Glad you are still alive and doing ok. Hope Nelly gets well soon too :)

  54. Oh, you poor thing! You described it so well, I was actually grimacing like it was happening to me! Hope you feel better soon, and, hope the bike is not too pricey to fix! Be careful out there!
