I QUIT.

No, not my training, not my job, not anything of significance really....except my run tonight.

I hit snooze this morning. I hate it when I do that. I mean I love it, getting that extra hour of sleep, but I hate it. And the kicker is that I knew it would be difficult to get my run done this evening. I knew that I had a busy day at work and an appointment at 6 PM. Yet I still self-sabataged and hit snooze.

Tonight I got home about 6:30 and The Hubs was making dinner-AWESOME! I was super starving since I had to eat my lunch at 11and devoured the chicken stir fry dinner...

Fast forward 45 minutes and I am on the treadmill at the Rec Center, plucking away at my 6 mile tempo run. I completed my slow, warm up mile at 9:48 min/mile pace. I quickened the pace to 8:45 min/mile for mile two. I could feel my stomach burning. The burn was creeping up into my throat and my stomach was H.E.A.V.Y. Mile 2 came and started to pass but things were not feeling good and I was doing that disgusting throw-up in my mouth thing....I hit the big, fat, red STOP button and packed up my stuff. I headed to the car with my tail between my legs. Tonight I quit my run. I could have done my 6 mile tempo run but somehow I just didn't feel like puking up my dinner. I was defeated.

I have to get it together. I'm still struggling with the early AM running thing even though it's only 3 days a week. Today's tempo run is scrapped. I think the smart thing to do is scrap it for tomorrow too and go ahead with the long run Saturday AM.

Have you ever just straight up quit in the middle of a run? Even though your legs and breathing were good? It felt weird and I was kind of angry. I needed this run but I just couldn't stomach it.

  1. oh yes I've been there many times. I always feel defeated afterwards but just pick it right back up the next time and get it done

  2. Once in a while this happens to me as well. But I think it's a good thing! The guilty feeling will motivate me for a while not to quit and run even stronger! Don't look back, just make sure your next run is better :)

  5. As a teacher, I struggle to get up early Mon-Fri. It is the HARDEST thing to think about taking one of my precious Sat. or Sun. to get up early for my long runs. I've yet to make it and suffer on the treadmill. No matter how much motivation I have at night, I can't do it. I can definitely relate...

    Good luck next time!

  6. I quit just two days ago....and felt so bad about I ran yesterday even though running wasn't in my training plan. And I felt so much better. I think the crappy days just happen, glad I'm not the only one! Wishing you a better run next time!

  7. I've been getting a lot of exercise hitting the snooze lately! Not good....I think part of it is knowing that I will be going back to work soon and I won't have that snooze option....who knows! I have quit runs before due to my tummy trouble. Not good! You'll get back!

  8. I've certainly changed workouts mid-way when I feel either better or worse than expected. I've turned around once when I found myself injured. I've never made it to the door when I just don't feel like going out for the needed workout.

It's all part of the mental game. In my book, you need mental rest days now and then and it's good in the long-run to take them. Don't worry, it takes weeks to lose any conditioning. One day is perfectly acceptable!

  10. Exactly why I prefer morning running. Yes, I've had to quit... For the exact same reasons... I don't do well post-dinner, unless its 3 hours post-dinner.

  11. I have totally done that--cut a run short rather than barf. It just makes you appreciate the next run more.

  12. yes, i've totally quit a run, which is why I try to do loops where i can't just stop, I have to keep going. i never thought i'd miss running, being in the hospital is no fun at all

  13. I have had quite a few runs like that. I have a sensitive stomach with running so I just make sure I don't eat anything too heavy beforehand. Don't let that run get the best of you, that kind of thing happens to all of us

  15. I think we've all been there. I know there have been times that I just stop abruptly out on the road or paths, his pause on my Garmin and stand there like a big dumb idiot asking myself "why did you just STOP?"

  16. I wanted to quit on this morning's run. It was 6 miles at a slower pace, but for some reason my heart rate was so freaking high that I just kept stopping to walk. It was a horrible run/walk, blah. I hate it when our bodies do that to us!

  17. I've had a rough summer with the heat and humidity, so yup...I've up and quit a few of my runs. Yes, I felt defeated and I needed the miles, but like you wrote...wasn't worth getting sick over :)

  18. I totally have runs like this sometimes, and it's not a problem because I know that it's just one run and that it's very normal to have this happen.
Every day is a new day and you will be back at it in no time :)
